Third Day Reflections

1) What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?

2) How do you feel about the SST-NTU Flagship Programme?
I felt that this programme is a very great opportunity to discover the world outside and learn more knowledge as we will be learning from the student advisors, who are experienced there. By conducting experiments, we are able to have a deeper understanding of the concepts learnt in school.

1) What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?

What can we do with the caffeine that we extracted?
How can we apply the things we learnt to our daily lives?

2) How do you feel about the SST-NTU flagship Programme?

-Describe how the programme has affected your understanding of the discipline.

It taught me more about the three different types of filtration methods and gave me a better understanding of how the process of extracting of caffeine works. It also taught me that caffeine had positive and negative effects such as keeping you awake and alert when you are tired but may cause headaches and hallucinations and even death due to overdosage.

It also taught me more about the concepts of conservation of energy, kinetic energy and potential energy after doing The Fastest Ball Challenge. It also gave me a better understanding about how the angle of inclination affects the the time taken for the ball to travel from one photogate to another and how much the angle of inclination has to be in order for the ball to travel down the ramp with the fastest timing.

The programme was very fun and exciting and it allowed us to try out different experiments which were very enriching. The equipments we got to use were also not able to be found in SST so we got to experience how it was used and what use it had when doing the experiment. It gave us a better understanding of the three different methods of filtration and the concepts of conservation of energy. It also bonded us as a group and we had a better understanding about each other and I made new friends too. It gave us a better learning experience and was certainly an enriching programme.

1) What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?

After extracting the caffeine, what uses does it have? How can we use it except for testing it?
How can we use what we have learnt in our daily life? What could we do?

2) How do you feel about the SST-NTU flagship Programme?

-Describe how the programme has affected your understanding of the discipline.

For the extraction of caffeine project, I learnt how to use different equipment in the chemistry lab for experiments and projects.
Also, I learnt that caffeine has positive effects and negative effects. The positive effects are that you can keep awake. The negative effects include headaches and hallucinations and death may occur due to overdosage.
For the fastest ball challenge, I learnt about the concept of how the angle of inclination will affect how fast the ball will roll along the diagonal and horizontal. I also learnt the concepts of energy conservation.

The SST-NTU flagship programme is very interesting and fun. For our project, we greatly increased our knowledge of Mathematical and Physical Science and we got to use apparatus that otherwise we would not be able to know. This project allows us to get a greater interest in the respective Sciences and then know what is the goal in the future, whether if we want to increase our knowledge in that certain subject.

1) What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?

Why do we extract caffeine?
How do we apply the formula in The Fastest Ball Challenge to other areas?

2) How do you feel about the SST-NTU flagship Programme?

-Describe how the programme has affected your understanding of the discipline.

I have a better understanding of the three techniques used in the process of extraction of caffeine.

Caffeine is used to enhance the taste of some products such as Coca-Cola, energetic drinks and also used to keep you alert when you feel tired. However, the negative effects of caffeine are headaches and hallucinations and deaths may occur due to over-dosage.

I also have a better understanding of the concepts of conservation of energy, kinetic and potential energy after The Fastest Ball Challenge.

A common myth is that the greater the angle of inclination, the faster the ball will travel. However through this challenge, I have learnt that this is not the case. The angle of inclination for the time taken for the ball to travel from one photogate to another can be calculated using a formula and not by allowing the angle of inclination to be at its maximum.

The programme was fun and enjoyable and we get to experiment with different lab apparatuses that are not available in SST. It also builds up on our knowledge of science in the area of chemistry and physics such as filtration techniques and concepts of conservation of energy. The programme also bonded us as a group and I feel that after this programme, I got to know some people better than before. This programme also enable us to generate new ideas for our upcoming ISS module. It’s certainly an inspiring programme and enhances our learning experiences beyond the classroom.
